The Great Escape is a seven-page graphic novel-style account of the Thai Cave rescue (the rescue of twelve boys and their football coach from the Tham Luang cave complex). The boys went missing on 23 June 2018, and were found nine days later 2.5 miles deep inside in a flooded underground cave complex. The boys were weak and unable to swim, and the conditions were such that few thought they would survive. Nevertheless after an immense local and international rescue effort all twelve boys and their coach were rescued without serious injury, between 8 and 10 July; one diver died.
The illustrations were commissioned by the Slow Journalism company for the quarterly print magazine Delayed Gratification. It was published on 27 November 2018, in issue no. 32 (July-September). Text is by Marcus Webb.
